Those all rely on praising the superiority of the Mahāyāna, disapproving of that Hīnayāna so that they will not seek to proceed toward it, since persons of indeterminate [lineage] ultimately return to the Great [Vehicle], so that those who have the great nature may swiftly proceed to the Great [Vehicle]. If not so, how could the sūtras and treatises contradict each other? Relying on these texts: at the time of the Lotus Assembly, the four kinds of śrāvakas were all present in the assembly at first. After the three stops, those with overweening pride withdrew from their seats; it is not said that true āryas also withdrew from their seats, because hearing the sūtra causes them to become no longer deluded about the Dharma. In the treatise's commentary on the prediction, not giving a prediction does not obstruct being present in the assembly. Alternatively, they may lack a determinate lineage; the treatise says that because there would be harm, alarm, and fear, no prediction was given to them, and because their faculties were not yet mature, they were not present in the assembly. One may accept or reject as one pleases.
