In distinguishing the two bodies of medicine and jewel: medicine has the efficacy of curing illness and uprooting suffering, and also has the function of preserving life, increasing longevity, and bringing forth treasures. Therefore the sūtra says, "If one preserves life and body, one has already obtained delightful objects." The wish-fulfilling jewel king not only rains down treasures, but can also eliminate disease. Prince Mahātyāgavat entered the sea and obtained the jewel, returning to heal his parents' eyes. The Larger Prajñāpāramitā says, "If a person has eye pain, when the jewel is placed upon their body, the illness is immediately cured." Thus we know that both universally possess the two meanings. If we rely specifically on one aspect, eliminating affliction is used to illustrate medicine, while realizing joy is used to illustrate the jewel.
