問：本迹與真應云何異？答：真應就一世橫辯，如諸經所明。本迹就三世豎論，如〈壽量〉所說。

Question: How do origin and traces differ from true and responsive? Answer: True and responsive are discussed horizontally across a single lifetime, as elucidated in the various sūtras. Origin and traces are treated vertically across the three periods of time, as explained in the 'Lifespan' chapter.
