Second, specifically explaining the universal gate: The ultimate principle is without number, but responding to conditions to benefit beings, it is given the name of one or two, or up to the immeasurable; extensive and concise are each appropriate, but for now we preserve the moderately fitting ten meanings: first, universality of benevolence and compassion; second, universality of the great vow; third, universality of practice; fourth, universality of severing delusions; fifth, universality of entering dharma-gates; sixth, universality of supernatural powers; seventh, universality of upāya; eighth, universality of expounding the Dharma; ninth, universality of making offerings to the Buddhas; tenth, universality of perfecting sentient beings. Above, the general universal gate has already been treated in terms of dharma; these ten universal gates are all treated in terms of the practice of merit and wisdom and adornment. The first five chapters are for self-benefit; the next three chapters are for transforming others; the last two chapters conclude the preceding two meanings. Within self-benefit, the first four are cultivating the cause, and the last one clarifies the fruit. Cultivating the cause also has two: the first two are vows, and the latter two are practice.
