2.23

問：地獄界重苦未拔，云何言與樂耶？答：眾生入地獄時多起三念，菩薩承機即與樂因，故言與樂也。又，菩薩能大悲代受苦，令其休息，餘界苦輕，與樂義可解。

Question: The heavy suffering of the hell realm has not yet been eradicated; how can one speak of bestowing pleasure? Answer: When sentient beings enter hell, they mostly give rise to three thoughts; the bodhisattva, taking advantage of the capacity, immediately bestows the cause of pleasure; therefore it is called bestowing pleasure. Furthermore, the bodhisattva is able with great compassion to take on suffering on their behalf, allowing them to rest. In the other realms, suffering is lighter, so the meaning of bestowing pleasure is easily understood.
