Third, regarding unconditioned benevolence: if one conditions the differentiated provisional names of the natures and marks of the ten dharma-realms, this provisional is then not provisional; since the ten dharma-realms are like illusions and like phantoms, emptiness is then not empty. Because it is not provisional, one does not condition the natures and marks of the ten dharma-realms; because it is not empty, one does not condition the truth of the ten dharma-realms. Having blocked these two extremes, there is no abiding and no attachment, which is called the middle way; nor is there any 'middle' that can be conditioned, being ultimately pure. When contemplating in this way, although one does not condition emptiness or the provisional, one spontaneously doubly illuminates both extremes, giving rise to unconditioned benevolence and compassion, eradicating the suffering of the two deaths and bestowing the bliss of the middle way, like a lodestone attracting iron, naturally corresponding without any instructor. Unconditioned benevolence and compassion attract the capacities of the three truths without any discrepancy and without requiring deliberation; hence it is called unconditioned benevolence and compassion. When a practitioner begins in the stage of an ordinary person, cultivating this benevolence and compassion enables entry into the five grades of disciples; through unconditioned benevolence and compassion of contemplative practice, one advances into the ranks of the ten faiths; through semblance unconditioned benevolence and compassion, one enters the ten abodes, which is only then partial realization of unconditioned benevolence and compassion; up to equal enlightenment, where the near-ultimate benevolence and compassion permeates sentient beings, unmoving like a clear mirror and thought-free like a lodestone spontaneously attracting iron. Hence it is called unconditioned benevolence and compassion. Being complete with the three truths is called 'universal'; penetrating to the middle way, it is called a 'gate.'
