知禮俯伏惟念，早年慕學投跡寶雲，遇授法師講說此品，神根既鈍遂數諮疑。先師念我學勤，不辭提耳，故所說義麁記在心。昔同聞人今各衰朽，慮乎先見不益後昆，共勉不才抄錄於世。但疑識暗謬有所傳，圓宗哲人刊正是望。時天禧五年歲在辛酉八月一日絕筆故序。

Zhili bows his head and reflects: In my early years, yearning for learning, I took refuge at Baoyun. Meeting Dharma Master Shou as he lectured on this chapter, my faculties were dull, so I repeatedly inquired about doubts. My late master, mindful of my diligence in study, did not spare any effort to guide me, and thus the meanings he taught were roughly committed to heart. Those who heard it together in the past are now each frail and decaying. Fearing that what was perceived earlier will not benefit posterity, we mutually encouraged my untalented self to make a transcript for the world. But I fear that my dark and erroneous understanding might distort what is transmitted; I look forward to corrections by wise men of the Perfect School. At this time, on the first day of the eighth month in the xinyou year, the fifth year of the Tianxi era [1021 CE], I lay down my brush, hence this preface.
