Eighth, distinguishing the original and the trace, in two parts: first, that both the original and the trace bestow and relieve, in two parts: first, each possesses both functions. Second, from 'Were it not for the original' onward, linking them together through the text. Were it not for the trace of liberating from all sufferings, the original of the single reality would not be revealed; therefore the earlier question and answer clarified the original from the trace. Were it not for the original of realizing the thousand suchnesses, one could not bestow the traces of the ten realms; therefore the later question and answer clarified the trace from the original. Second, from 'Question: The original' onward, that the original and the trace differ from the true and the responsive, in two parts: first, the question; second, the answer. What is expounded in the various sūtras, beginning from the stages and the abodes up to equal and marvelous [enlightenment], is that whenever one part of the true becomes clear, one part of the response arises; how could it be only in a single lifetime, when it actually resides in the present thought? This is called the horizontal discourse. Distinctly clarifying the original and the trace, as in the 'Foshouliang pin', now takes what is remote and distant as the original. What was expounded in the various sūtras and in the Trace Gate as recently accomplished is called the trace. Since it is based on the distant and the recent, it is therefore called vertical discourse across the three periods of time. The earlier clarification regarding Avalokiteśvara mostly discussed the original and trace in terms of substance and function; now, to manifest the distinctive character of this scripture, it clarifies the original and trace in terms of the distant and the recent.
