As for "at thirty-four mental moments, both afflictions and habit energies are exhausted," those who suddenly realize arhatship as well as pratyekabuddhahood also obtain it uninterruptedly in thirty-four mental moments, but they do not by this suddenly exhaust both afflictions and habit energies. When speaking of habit energies, there are habit energies of view and thought, and habit energies of dust and sand. Bodhisattvas cultivate and learn the Dharma gates of dust and sand to remedy their inferior wisdom; in each and every gate they use the contemplation of the four truths to subdue their principal afflictions, and in each and every gate their practices of the six perfections perfume the habit energies of view and thought. Therefore, beneath the king of trees, with thirty-four mental moments, they realize the four true truths upon the Dharmas of dust and sand, thereby causing both the principal afflictions and the two kinds of habit energies to be exhausted simultaneously, and therefore they are able to consummate both truths. Only then do they differ from the disciples of the three vehicles, exclusively manifesting the Buddha eye and Buddha wisdom. Third, from "Herein..." downward, explaining the successors in terms of the Buddha. Second, from "If in terms of..." downward, concluding with contemplation and wisdom. If one explains the person of Avalokiteśvara in the Tripiṭaka [Teaching], such are the characteristics.
