Question: Inherent good and evil as well as suffering and bliss are all Dharma-gates, unproduced and unceasing; now why speak of bestowing and relieving? Answer: This wondrous discourse must not be discussed lightly. Because the bodhisattvas of the three [teachings] contemplate suffering and bliss merely as achieved through cultivation, they retain the effort of bestowing and relieving and cannot activate the power of the unconditioned; therefore their benevolence and compassion are both not called universal. Now, knowing that the produced suffering and bliss, as well as the causes and conditions capable of producing them, are all inherent virtue, therefore relieving all suffering does not diminish anything by a hair's breadth, and bestowing all bliss does not increase anything by a tiny fraction; only then is benevolence and compassion vast and universal, forgetting weariness through dust-mote kalpas. This condition on sentient beings is not two and not different from the unconditioned.
