Now we shall explain: the bodhisattva sees that sentient beings take space and consciousness to form the retribution body, yet in turn are distressed by space and consciousness. When cultivating various goods, the karma of space and consciousness can also ruin those goods. Contemplating space and consciousness, there are the obstacles to the three truths and the principle of the three truths. In this manner, compassion is aroused at every point: sorrow desires to eradicate the suffering of sentient beings, while kindness desires to bestow happiness upon sentient beings. Thus the Jingming jing says: 'The bodhisattva contemplates that the four great elements, the element of space, and the element of consciousness are all empty because of emptiness.' There are no four great elements, no space, and no consciousness—this is entering the non-dual Dharma gate, attaining the king of samādhis, capable of extending responses throughout the ten dharma realms. With compassion amid phenomena, one rescues from the distress of retributional space and consciousness; with compassion that cultivates the good, one rescues from the distress of evil-karmic space and consciousness; with compassion of the three contemplations, one rescues from the distress of afflictive space and consciousness. Therefore, know that Avalokiteśvara has attained sovereignty in the Dharma gate of space and consciousness. Huayan chapter thirty-nine says: 'The monk Supratiṣṭhita performed great Buddha-works in empty space.' If one performs the perfect contemplation, contemplating the causes and conditions, nature, marks, root, and branch of the space element as ultimate, then all the ten dharma realms completely tend toward the gate of emptiness; consciousness is also like this. Arousing unconditioned compassion to perfume sentient beings, wherever there is capacity in the ten dharma realms, one can enable all simultaneously to attain liberation.
