2.54

四句此開五味義，穢國既爾，淨國亦然。既有利、鈍兩機，寧不頓、漸二說以明應身及說法也？此中應明別圓本觀所起慈悲，今遍法界起，應例前思之云云。

The four propositions here unfold the meaning of the five flavors; as it is in the defiled land, so it is in the pure land. Since there are both sharp and dull capacities, how could there not be sudden and gradual preachings to explain the response bodies and the preaching of the Dharma? Here, one should explain the compassion arising from the fundamental contemplation of the Separate and Perfect teachings, which now arises throughout the dharma realm; this should be inferred analogously to what came before, and so on.
