Next, explaining the fire of affliction: when śrāvakas detest birth and death, they view the causes and effects of the three realms as like a burning house; with the four inversions and karmic fetters, smoke and flames rise together, and as they revolve and fall, burned by fire, birth and death spread on ceaselessly day and night. Diligently seeking skillful means, vying and jostling with one another to escape the burning house, they recite [the name of] Avalokiteśvara. When the spiritual capacity matures, resonance occurs; mounting the goat-drawn cart, they swiftly exit the burning house and enter nirvāṇa with remainder or without remainder, thereby attaining liberation. Next, this is explained for pratyekabuddhas; next, for practitioners of the six perfections; next, for the Shared teaching; next, for the Separate teaching; next, for the Perfect teaching; next, for people of dull faculties in the land of transformational [birth and death]; and next, for people of sharp faculties in the land of transformational [birth and death]. In all, there are nine turns of practitioners: when cultivating the path, they are all burned and harmed by the fire of delusion and affliction of the five entrenchments; each cultivates skillful means, but before their skillful means are perfected, the peril of fire constantly presses upon them; reciting [the name of] Avalokiteśvara, their skillful means are immediately perfected and they thereupon attain liberation. One should elaborate the meaning of spiritual capacity and resonance in detail according to each respective dharma gate.
