Bodhisattvas can progress everywhere; dull ones are also like those of the two vehicles. Persons of the two vehicles only begin to see the Buddha-nature here; thus it is said: "They first saw my body and heard what I taught," and then all faithfully accepted it and entered the Tathāgata's wisdom, which confirms that persons of great capacity first attain clarified butter. Excepting those who previously cultivated and studied the small vehicle, I now also cause them to hear this sūtra and enter the Tathāgata's wisdom, which confirms that those of small capacity only begin to enter clarified butter in the Lotus Sūtra. If there are again those of dull faculties who do not awaken at the Lotus Sūtra, they are further tempered and ripened in the Prajñā teachings, until the Nirvāṇa Sūtra preaches the superior three cultivations, directly clarifying eternal presence, and they attain seeing the Buddha-nature, which is indeed clarified butter. In this way, in the defiled land of co-dwelling, he manifests a Buddha body to preach the perfect and gradual dharmas; or manifests various bodies to preach the perfect and gradual dharmas.
