Next, explaining being delivered by a bodhisattva: whether of higher stages or lower stages, or belonging to the Tripiṭaka, Shared, Separate, or Perfect teachings, their assisting the Buddha differs. If the Buddha acts as a Buddha in the true reward [land], Avalokiteśvara takes the form of a bodhisattva of the true reward [land]; or takes the form of a bodhisattva of the expedient land; or takes the form of a bodhisattva of the co-dwelling land, responding to both sharp and dull conditions. Responding to sharp conditions is like Dharmamati, Vajragarbha, and others in the Huayan jing; responding to dull conditions is like Maitreya and others. If the Buddha turns the dharma gates of the five flavors, with the flourishing and declining of these dharma gates, the bodhisattvas assisting the Buddha also flourish and decline step by step; whether provisional or real, they broadly benefit sentient beings. Here also one should explain the capacity and response of the fundamental contemplation of the Separate and Perfect teachings.
