Second, explaining the body of Brahmā: Brahmā is the lord of the form devas, named Śikhin, which is translated here as "topknot." The Yingluo jing explains that all four dhyānas have kings; what is spoken of here as Brahmā must be the summit of the first dhyāna, which still has the dharmas of vitarka, vicāra, and speech, and is capable of being the lord of a thousand realms. Avalokiteśvara cultivates the white samādhi, neither grasping nor rejecting. Because he does not grasp, he is not born in accordance with dhyāna; because he does not reject, he responds by preaching the four propositions of discourse on transcending desire for King Brahmā, manifesting his body to lead from the provisional to the real.
