Garuḍas: translated here as 'golden wings', because the tips of their wings are golden, whence they are named. This bird made an agreement with the nāgas: 'You coil around Sumeru and break it; I will strike the sea until the mud is seen. If I am not equal to it, I will give over my children to be your servants; if you are not equal to it, you will give over your children for me to eat.' Heavenly power sustained Sumeru so that it could not be broken, so the nāgas gave over their children. The egg-born eat egg-born nāgas and cannot eat the [other] three births; the moisture-born eat two; the womb-born eat three; the transformation-born eat four.
