Second, the answer comprises three senses: first, two gāthās generally answer the two sections; next, nineteen gāthās specifically answer the two sections; third, four gāthās encourage upholding the name and making offerings. Within the general answer, first, one gāthā is the direct answer. Next, the one gāthā, "Relying on the fundamental contemplation of loving-kindness and compassion, / Listen to the conduct of Avalokiteśvara," is the general answer to the preceding section. Avalokiteśvara derives his name from the conditions of object and wisdom, and "responding well in all quarters" is the general answer to the latter section on the universal gate manifestation; both are to be interpreted using the general meaning above. The next gāthā traces back to the original contemplation and vows of compassion, revealing the ten benefits of wisdom and elimination in the present. Originally, relying on the four truths—both distinct and perfect, immeasurable and unconditioned—he gave rise to vows and practices; because the object of the vows was deep and vast, his vast vow was like the ocean. "Vast" means extensive. Traversing kalpas shows the duration of time to be distant and long; in each and every kalpa, serving many thousands of kotis shows that the encounters were also numerous. At each buddha's place, he further made specific vows, such as the forty-eight, etc. Each vow contained the dharmadhātu; hence it is also called "great." Traversing kalpas concerns the vertical; serving many concerns the horizontal. Within each vertical there is the horizontal, and within each horizontal there is the time traversed, as explained extensively and so forth. Taking this original vow in the general [answer] and applying it down through the specific answers to each difficulty, as well as extensively after the universal gate, can be understood.
