The Commentary states: "The characteristic of arising, ceasing, and deliberative cognition" is precisely the empty tathāgatagarbha. However, here the text reveals its aspect of being able to conceal, yet does not name it the tathāgatagarbha. When it says "concealing the principle without being manifest is the tathāgatagarbha," this is the non-empty tathāgatagarbha; it is named "tathāgatagarbha" in terms of being that which is concealed. When it says "its nature is tranquil and unmoving," this reveals that although this nature of the garbha is concealed, it does not alter. This "nature" has five meanings, as explained in the *Treatise on Signlessness* (*Wuxiang lun*). First, the meaning of "category" is the meaning of "nature." Just as all material dharmas, such as vases and robes, are not separate from the category of the four great elements, and all take the four great elements as their nature, so too sentient beings do not depart from the one realm (dhātu), because they all use the one realm as their category. The *Mahāyānasaṃgraha-śāstra* calls this the meaning of "essential category," while the *Buddha-Nature Treatise* (*Fo xing lun*) calls it the meaning of "own-nature"; their words differ slightly, but their intention is not different. Second, the meaning of "cause" is the meaning of "nature." Just as there is the nature of fire within wood, which serves as a cause for fire and is therefore called "nature," so too the various uncontaminated dharmas of the noble ones are accomplished by taking this as their cause. Both treatises likewise call this the meaning of "cause." Third, the meaning of "production" is the meaning of "nature." Just as refining pure gold produces ornaments, and the production of ornaments takes gold as its nature, this realm is likewise: it can produce the five-part dharma-body of the fruit stage, and the production of the dharma-body takes this realm as its nature. In the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* it is also called the meaning of "production"; in the *Buddha-Nature Treatise* it is called the meaning of "attainment"—to distinguish it from the meaning of "cause," which precedes the fruit, it is named the meaning of "attainment" with reference to what has already been produced. Fourth, the meaning of "unalchangeable" is the meaning of "nature." Just as the nature of the vajra-jewel abides equally for an eon, without increase or decrease, so too this realm abides equally across the three periods of time; it is not destroyed in the worldly, and not exhausted in the supramundane. Both treatises call this the meaning of "reality"; the meaning of "reality" is the meaning of "indestructible," so although the words differ, the intention is the same. Fifth, the meaning of "secret store" is the meaning of "nature." Just as there is the nature of pure gold within yellow rock, which is of no benefit if the ore is not broken open, but has precious utility when refined in accord with [the process], therefore that nature has the meaning of being hidden and concealed. One should know that the nature of the tathāgatagarbha is also like this: if its entanglements are not broken, it is external and defiled; when the entanglements are broken and it corresponds [with purity], it becomes internal and pure. Therefore one knows that this nature has the meaning of a secret store. In the *Buddha-Nature Treatise* it is called the meaning of "secret," and in the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* it is called the meaning of "garbha (store)"; that their meaning is identical while their words differ is clearly evident. Now, what is called "nature" in this passage contains these five meanings. "Tranquil and unmoving" briefly reveals the latter two: "tranquil" is the meaning of "secret store," and "unmoving" is the meaning of "unchangeable." The foregoing has finished the direct and extensive explanation of the meaning of the single awakening.
