The sūtra says: Mahābalavān Bodhisattva said, 'How is it neither mind nor reflection, intrinsically pure?' The Buddha said, 'The dharma of empty thusness is not a dharma of mind-consciousness, not a dharma belonging to mental associates, not a dharma of the sign of emptiness, not a dharma of the sign of form, not a dharma dissociated from mind, not an unconditioned dharma associated with mind; it is not a reflected shadow, not what is demonstrated, not self-nature, not distinction, not name, nor sign and meaning. Why is this? Because it is thusness. Dharmas that are not thusness are also without the absence of thusness; there is no existence of the absence of thusness, nor is there being without thusness. Why is this? The dharma of the root principle is neither principle nor root; it is free from all disputes, and its character cannot be seen. Bodhisattva! Such pure dharmas are not born by the production of arising, nor are they extinguished by the extinction of ceasing.'
