The commentary states: This is the third [part], the expression of understanding. 'Not formed through combination': it is neither mind nor mental factor, because mind and mental factors have distinct substances and correspond with each other. 'Nor are they formed in isolation': it is neither intrinsic nature nor differentiating characteristics, because these two have distinct meanings but no two substances. 'Neither bound': because it is neither name nor meaning, since name and meaning are mutually guests. 'Nor partnered': because it is neither shadow nor substance, since shadow and substance belong to mutual types and serve as partners. 'They neither gather nor disperse': because it is neither space nor form, since accumulating constitutes form and breaking apart constitutes space. 'They are neither born nor extinguished': because it is neither non-associated nor unconditioned. Non-associated formations are generated, while all unconditioned dharmas are revealed by cessation. This expresses understanding of the previously explained meaning of being free from the six pairs. 'Nor do they have the characteristic of coming' is because it is not born from that which generates birth. 'Or the characteristic of going' is because it is not extinguished from that which extinguishes cessation. This expresses understanding of the subsequent explanation of natural purity. Saying 'inconceivable' at first is because the thusness of non-thusness is free from mind and speech. Saying 'inconceivable' at the end is because the mind free from mind is also free from the two.
