The sūtra states: At that time, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva said, 'The characteristics of all dharmas / do not abide on the two shores, / nor do they abide in midstream; / mind and consciousness are also like this. / How is it that the objective realms / are produced from consciousness? / If consciousness can have arising, / this consciousness is also produced from [conditions]. / How can a non-arising consciousness / be able to produce that which is produced?' / Thereupon, the Venerable One spoke a verse, saying: / 'The two of that which is produced and that which can produce: / these two are the grasper and grasped conditions; / both are fundamentally merely names without selfhood; / grasping them as existent is [like] flowers in the sky and phantoms. / At the time when consciousness has not yet arisen, / the objective realm is not produced at that time. / At the time when the objective realm has not yet arisen, / at that time consciousness is also ceased. / They are fundamentally both nonexistent, / and they neither make exist nor have existence. / Unarisen consciousness is also nonexistent; / how could the objective realm exist from it?'
