3.42

經曰　舍利弗言：「如來義觀不住諸流，應離四禪而超有頂。」佛言：「如是。何以故？一切法名數，四禪亦如是，若見如來者，如來心自在，常在滅盡處，不出亦不入，內外平等故。」

The sūtra states: Śāriputra said, "The Tathāgata's contemplation of reality does not abide in the various flows, and should be free from the four dhyānas and transcend the peak of existence." The Buddha said, "It is so. Why is this? All dharmas are enumerations of names; the four dhyānas are likewise so. If one sees the Tathāgata, the Tathāgata's mind is sovereign and constantly resides in the place of cessation, neither emerging nor entering, because internal and external are equal."
