The commentary states: This is the fourth part, the exposition. The meaning of these four lines has the distinct and the general: distinctly, they explain the meaning of the two gates; generally, they reveal the dharma of the one mind. Within this one mind and two gates, there is nothing among all buddhadharmas that is not subsumed. What is this meaning? The first two lines integrate the conventional into the ultimate, revealing the principle of equality; the lower two lines integrate the ultimate into the conventional, revealing the gate of distinction. Speaking generally, the ultimate and the conventional are non-dual, yet they do not stay fixed as one. Being non-dual, they are precisely the one mind; not staying fixed as one, their entire essence constitutes two. These are called the one mind and the two gates. Such is the general purport. Next, explaining the text: "The meaning of what is produced from causes and conditions" adduces all dharmas of conventional truth. "This meaning is extinct" integrates the conventional into the ultimate, meaning that what is produced is originally calm and extinct. The words "not produced" reveal the reason why its meaning of production is extinction: because its meaning of production is precisely non-production, and seeking its meaning of production cannot be achieved, therefore the meaning of production is precisely calm extinction. "Extinguishing all meanings of production and extinction" adduces the dharma of calm extinction of the ultimate truth. "This meaning is produced" integrates the ultimate into the conventional, meaning that the dharma of calm extinction arises conditionally. The words "not extinct" reveal the reason why its calm extinction is production: because its calm extinction is not calm extinction, and seeking the meaning of calm extinction is unobtainable, therefore calm extinction arises from conditions. Calm extinction being production is the production of non-production; the meaning of production being extinction is the extinction of non-extinction. Because it is the extinction of non-extinction, extinction is precisely production; because it is the production of non-production, production is precisely calm extinction. Combining them, production is precisely calm extinction, yet does not remain fixed in extinction; extinction is precisely production, yet does not abide in production. Production and extinction are non-dual; movement and calm are without distinction: this is called the dharma of the one mind. Although truly non-dual, it does not remain fixed as one; its entire essence follows conditions to produce movement, and its entire essence follows conditions to be calmly extinct. By this principle, production is calm extinction and calm extinction is production, unhindered and unobstructed, neither identical nor different: this is the general and distinct meaning of the single verse.
