The sūtra states: "In this contemplation-awakening, should it be endowed with the thirty-seven factors of awakening?" / The Buddha said, "It is so: it is endowed with the thirty-seven factors of awakening. Why is this? The four foundations of mindfulness, the four right exertions, the four bases of psychic power, the five spiritual faculties, the five powers, the seven limbs of awakening, and the eightfold noble path—these have many names but a single referent; they are neither one nor different. Because of their names and numbers, they are mere names and mere words; no dharma can be grasped. A dharma that cannot be grasped has a single referent and is without letters. The character of being without letters is the true and real emptiness; the meaning of emptiness is thusness just as it is; and the principle of thusness is endowed with all dharmas. Good son, one who abides in the principle of thusness crosses over the ocean of the three sufferings."
