The sūtra states: The Buddha said, "When I teach the Dharma, it is because you sentient beings are within birth-and-death that I speak. I speak the ineffable; therefore I speak it. What I speak is speech of the referent, not letters; what sentient beings speak is speech of letters, not the referent. Speech that is not of the referent is entirely empty and non-existent; words that are empty and non-existent say nothing of the referent; those that do not speak of the referent are all false speech. What accords with speech of the referent is that the real is empty yet not empty, and the empty is real yet not real; it is free from the two characteristics, and within the middle it is not middle; a dharma that is not middle is free from the three characteristics, with no place seen, spoken in accordance with thusness just as it is. As there is no non-existence, there is no existence in non-existence; as there is no existence, there is no non-existence in existence. Existence and non-existence are not present, and because speech is not present, it is not present in thusness; thusness does not possess thusness, yet it is not without being spoken in accordance with thusness."
