The treatise says: The dharma of thusness is endowed with all virtues and serves as the fundamental nature of all virtues of practice; hence it is called 'true nature.' Such a true nature is cut off from all names and characteristics; therefore it is said that 'the true nature is empty.' Moreover, this true nature is free from characteristics and free from nature: free from characteristics means free from false characteristics; free from nature means free from the true nature. Because it is free from false characteristics, false characteristics are empty; because it is free from true nature, true nature is also empty. Therefore it is said that 'the true nature is empty.' Now in this chapter, both of these two meanings are revealed; hence the title of the chapter is established on the basis of these meanings.
