Fourth, analyzing the text: this text has three parts. First, adducing the number, citing witnesses, briefly praising, and enumerating the names. Second, from "What are the bodhisattva's…" onward, distinguishing the characteristics. Third, from "These treasuries have ten…" onward, concluding with praise. The first section has two parts, which are understandable. As for the ten names: 1. Faith, which is the first of the ten stages (daśabhūmi) and "copying and upholding" in the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. 2. Precepts, which are kindness and compassion in the stages, and the sixth, "teaching others to attain," in the treatise. 3. Shame and 4. embarrassment, which are practice in the stages, and the ninth, "dwelling alone in empty quietude," etc., in the treatise. 5. Hearing, which is knowing the sūtras and treatises in the stages, and the fourth, "reverently listening and receiving," in the treatise. 6. Giving, which is named "relinquishment" in the stages, and named "giving to others" in the treatise. 7. Wisdom, which is the tenth in the stages, "cultivating in accordance with the Dharma," and the tenth, "cultivating the intention of entering the characteristics," in the treatise. 8. Correct mindfulness, which is "tirelessness" in the stages, and "reciting and chanting by oneself" in the treatise. 9. Upholding, which is "firm power" in the stages, and the seventh, "practicing with single-mindedness as taught," in the treatise. 10. Eloquence, which is the sixth in the stages, "skillfully understanding worldly phenomena" (that is, the four unobstructed eloquences), and the eighth, "expounding extensively and properly for others," in the treatise. Both the Daśabhūmivyākhyāna and the Mahāyānasaṃgraha include "making offerings"; why is it absent here? It is because here shame and embarrassment are divided into two; or it may be that this treasury has a meaning entirely distinct from those.
