First, as for explaining the title: the marks of the Buddha are boundless, and therefore are like an ocean. Here, provisionally adapting to humans, thirty-two are spoken of; surpassing the devas, eighty secondary marks are spoken of; alternatively, this may pertain to the response body. This is an explanation according to the triyāna. Now, this text concerns the marks of the ekayāna, and therefore they are like an ocean; thus Samantabhadra speaks of them because the lodged virtues are boundless. Question: Above, in the 'Chapter on Inconceivable Dharmas', he addressed a single person individually; why not so here? Answer: The above dharma was the essence; it was addressed individually to show its pre-eminence.
