The first is the position of the bodhisattva of the first dedication, 'Saving and Protecting Sentient Beings While Free of the Characteristics of Sentient Beings'. The elder is named Utpalagandha ('Blue Lotus Incense'), who has entered the dharma-gate of incense. First is exhortation and instruction; second, from 'Then Sudhana' on down, entering according to the teaching; third, from 'He answered' on down, the actual entry. In the first, the instruction, there are three [parts], as before. In the second, the entering, there are six: first, taking leave; second, from 'At that time, even not sparing [one's life]' on down, mindfully cultivating the previous dharma to gain benefit, which has two [aspects] that may be known; third, from 'Gradually' on down, arriving at that place; fourth, from 'Approaching Utpalagandha' on down, following his progress to attain the actual [encounter]; fifth, from 'Touching the head and face' on down, paying homage; sixth, stating one's own aspiration and asking about what has not yet been heard. In the third, the actual entry, there are three: first, praising the aspiration; second, from 'I am able' on down, explaining his own portion of the dharma-gate; third, from 'All the great [bodhisattvas]' on down, deferring with respect to the superior portions. His own portion has two: first, distinguishing what is known; second, the conclusion. The first text has three: first, knowing the dharma of incense; second, from 'that incense' on down, knowing the causes of the arising of incense, which has ten causes: first, establishment; second, purpose; third, completion of the dharma; fourth, completeness of all parts; fifth, faultlessness; sixth, virtues perfected and immovable; seventh, skillful manifestation; eighth, delimitations; ninth, accomplishing the prior task; tenth, place of origin; third, from 'Among humans there is an incense' on down, distinguishing the superior powers. In deferring with respect, first he distinguishes, and next he concludes.
