The foreign original of this sūtra originally had one hundred thousand verses. Formerly, the Jin Daoist [monk] Zhi Faling obtained thirty-six thousand verses of it from the kingdom of Khotan. On the tenth day of the third month in the fourteenth year of the Yixi reign period of the Jin [418 CE], the year of Chunhuo, at Xie Sikong Temple in Yangzhou, the Indian Dhyāna Master Buddhabhadra held the Sanskrit text in his hand and translated the foreign sounds into Jin [Chinese], while the Śramaṇa Shi Faye personally took it down in writing. At that time, Meng Yi, the Governor of Wujun, and Chu Shudu, General of the Right Guard, served as dānapatis. By the tenth day of the sixth month in the second year of the Yuanxi reign period [420 CE], the translation from the foreign text was completed; by the twenty-eighth day of the twelfth month in the xinyou year, the second year of the Yongchu reign period of the Great Song [422 CE], the collation was finished.
