Eighth, from "abstaining from covetousness" downwards, the three clarify the abandonment of unwholesome actions of the mind. All only have abandonment through antidote, and lack the other two abandonments, as is known. In the treatise, non-covetousness has three kinds: 1. matters of wealth belonging to another's affairs. This has two: those already appropriated, and those present where there is a conception of appropriation. Although the object is not present, it belongs to someone from afar who maintains a protective conception; these two are called "if an object belongs to another". 2. Essence, meaning the substance of the wealth. This also has two: gold and the like which are merely used and cannot be eaten or worn; and clothing and food which serve to support the body. These two are the objects of covetousness; hence it is said "appropriated and used by another". 3. Differentiation, meaning covetousness has three kinds: inferior, middling, and superior, namely initially giving rise to hope, secondly wishing that it belongs to oneself, and thirdly giving rise to the intention to seize it. Abandoning these three kinds of covetousness, it is therefore said "not generating the thought: 'I shall take it'."
