Fourth, regarding the five faculties (indriya): because one can give rise to the path of seeing based on these five practices, they are called 'faculties'. A subsequent passage in the 'Chapter on Transcending the World' says: 'First is the faculty of faith, which cannot be destroyed; second is generating great diligence, bringing all matters to completion without turning back; third is dwelling securely in correct mindfulness, eliminating scattered thoughts; fourth is the skillful means of samādhi, knowing decisively; fifth is the realm of wisdom, skillfully distinguishing.' The explanation states: this direct sūtra text itself explains them in terms of the bodhisattva path. 'Relying on revulsion' and so forth, as well as the fifth, the five powers, should all be known by analogy with the preceding.
