Fourth, concerning the discrimination in terms of the knowledge of all aspects: This corresponds to the seventh, 'the contemplation of faith and entry regarding overweening pride and non-overweening pride.' Śrāvakas do not perceive subtle suffering and consider themselves to have no suffering, which is called overweening pride; however, they perceive coarse suffering, which is non-overweening pride. This is brought up to cause those of the two vehicles to have faith and entry into the subtle suffering of conditioned arising in the Mahāyāna. Bodhisattvas illuminating this is called 'contemplation.' 'Not knowing as it truly is' and below explains and establishes the characteristic of pride. This single approach earlier relied on great compassion to transform non-Buddhists, and now relies on great wisdom to gather in the two vehicles. Because the text contains multiple meanings, the treatise master skillfully selected them.
