Fourth, in explaining the text: that it is spoken by the Bodhisattva Mind King demonstrates that due to sovereignty over worldly consciousness, there are numbers of kalpas. Within this, there are three [parts]: first, raising ten worlds to calculate and measure the gradation; second, analogously displaying the millions; third, distinguishing the final, abstruse limit. As for [questions such as] what constitutes day and night in worlds such as the Sukhāvatī-lokadhātu, the explanation is: it may be distinguished through the opening and closing of lotuses, which corresponds to one kalpa in the Sahā world. Another explanation: in one kalpa of this Sahā world there are a total of so-many days and nights; counting one kalpa as a single day and night based on this number of days and nights, one then calculates so-many kalpas to make a single kalpa of the Sukhāvatī world. Then, using this kalpa to measure the subsequent worlds, one can know them all by calculating according to this standard. Thus, when reaching a single kalpa of the final world, it corresponds to ineffably ineffable kalpas in the initial world. After reaching the Bhadramukha realm, the ocean of realms is equal, with neither superiority nor inferiority. Therefore, when it speaks here of Samantabhadra and others filling [them], it is because it is the utmost culmination when viewed from below. If taking Samantabhadra as the measure, viewed from above he is still within the count, so this is not stated. That only Buddhas fill these worlds is also spoken of in the Da foming jing. Moreover, Dharma Master Xuanzang translated a separate single fascicle titled Xian wubian fotu jing (Sūtra Revealing Boundless Buddha-Lands), which is this very chapter.
