Second, the purpose of its occurrence has three [aspects]: First, distant: these following three chapters are to generally answer the questions asked at Universal Light regarding the Buddha's unsurpassed ground and so forth. Question: If it distantly answers the earlier questions, why is there an additional request here? Explanation: Because they are distant from each other, it is initiated again. If so, why was it not like this in the preceding chapters? Explanation: Because the preceding chapters were all identically at the causal stage, whereas now the fruition dharmas are distinguished, which are separated by stage. Another explanation: this is mindful longing for the Dharma to be spoken, not a separate request. If so, why is there no such precedent in the preceding chapters? Explanation: Because the fruition dharmas are profound and subtle, revealing that the vessel for the Dharma is earnest and sincere, mindfulness is therefore required. Speaking of causal dharmas is contrary to this, so it is not a precedent. Second, intermediate purpose of its occurrence: because the completion of the causes born of cultivation was already distinguished earlier, now this precisely reveals the full perfection of the fruition repaying the causes, and therefore the subsequent three chapters follow next. Third, proximate purpose of its occurrence: the preceding Chapter on Abodes was the conclusion of the perfection of causes, and this chapter is the head of the attainment of fruition, so it follows next.
