First, in citing the teaching to encourage cultivation: since he previously deferred, acknowledging that he himself did not know, who then can know? Therefore he now points to the subsequent stage, encouraging him to cultivate and enter it. Within this, as for the word 'Sāgaramukha' (Haimen), this country is nearby on the southern sea, with the city gate facing the sea, hence the name. Moreover, it symbolizes the opening of the gate of contemplating the ocean, seeing the dharmadhātu of cultivating the ground, and is therefore used as the name. The bhikṣu is as before. 'Sāgaramegha' (Haiyun): this bhikṣu constantly stays on the seashore, contemplating the great ocean of dependent origination and the adornment of persons and dharmas over that ocean covering all like clouds; he is named after what is contemplated, like 'bodhisattva' and so forth. Furthermore, it symbolizes that this bhikṣu internally possesses superior virtues deep and vast as an ocean, and externally responds to the manifold capacities, raining the Dharma like a cloud. Moreover, the dharmadhātu contemplated is deep and vast as an ocean, and the great wisdom able to contemplate is all-pervading like a cloud; hence he is named after the object and wisdom. Encouraging him to go and instructing him to inquire are the same as before and can be known. Second, from 'Good son' downward, praising his superior virtues, there are ten phrases: the first one is general, and the remaining nine are specific. Being complete with causal wholesome roots refers to the wholesome roots prior to the bhūmis. The 'great earth' is above the bhūmis; 'great power' is the buddha-stage. The next two are able to praise the cause so as to increase and broaden it. The next two cause the practices and vows to appear in purity. The next two cause the merits of the two benefits to become complete. Third, from 'At that time Sudhana' downward, paying respects and departing.
