In the ninth dwelling, that of the Dharma prince, first, in adducing the teaching to encourage cultivation, the country named Advancing and Seeking (Jìnqiú): as it has the appearance of opposing the Way, and people all turn their backs on and abandon it, since it has already become a compliant function, he is therefore made to advance and seek. Furthermore, being in a stage of opposing the Way, one should not be negligent, hence it is taken as its name. According to the Indian text, it is named Īśāna (Yīshénà), which here means "wilderness" (kuàngyě), and is also called "hopeful seeking" (xīqiú). A "brahmin" is one of pure conduct with a brahmacārin's resolve. As for "Expedient Life" (Fāngbiànmìng / Jayosman): he follows circumstances, taking expedients as his life, and therefore knives and fire cannot harm him. Furthermore, taking knives and fire which oppose the Way as expedients, and correct practice continuing uninterrupted, it is therefore called "life." The Indian text is "wild man" (āraṇyaka).
