Fourth, from "replied, saying" downward, he reveals his own dharmadhātu. Therein are two parts: first, praising the arousal of the mind [for bodhi]; second, properly transmitting the dharmadhātu, in which he first presents the Dharma gates he understands, and later concludes with their names. In the former, there are three parts: first, listing the substances of incense he understands, of which there are thirty types. Therein, he first understands the perfuming by the incense of the mundane realm's dependencies and primary states, and second, from "extinguishing defilements" downward, he understands the perfuming by the incense of supramundane correct practice, by which the bodhisattva benefits sentient beings. Second, from "the arising of that incense" downward, it explains that there are ten aspects to knowing the principles of the incense: 1. knowing that from which it arises; 2. knowing where the fragrance reaches; 3. knowing the benefits accomplished once reached; 4. the completion of what is done; 5. enabling joy and purity; 6. causing freedom from affliction and tranquility; 7. skillfully entering the Dharma; 8. the scope of what is known; 9. the karmic actions performed; 10. the ultimate root. Third, from "Good man" downward, he knows the karmic functions of the incense, briefly mentioning ten types: the first internally knows it through ten meanings. Arising from dragons fighting means knowing its arising. The cloud of light covering the land of sweet taste means knowing what it carries out. Raining down fragrant water means knowing its accomplishment. The golden color of the body upon contact means knowing its fulfillment. Feeling joy upon smelling the fragrance means knowing its purity. Extinguishing all illnesses and so forth means knowing its tranquility. Dedicated orientation and so forth is upāya. Knowing them is the sphere. Preaching the Dharma for them is the karmic action. Causing them to arouse the mind without retreating is the root. The nine types such as ox-head sandalwood each also have ten meanings; because the text preserves brevity, it mentions two or three, etc., which should be inferred accordingly. Saindhava translates here as rock salt.
