Fifth, from "all great [bodhisattvas]" downward, reverently deferring to their superior progression: although the elder knows that the Buddhas of the three times are not extinguished, he is nonetheless unable to make the single thought that knows and the three limits that are known equal and non-dual; second, he is unable to abide, by means of the knowing wisdom, directly in the known Buddha stage; third, he knows all kalpas prior and posterior, yet cannot know the notion of kalpa-lessness; fourth, though he sees that the Buddhas are unextinguished, he cannot know the principle of equality that this Buddha is precisely that Buddha; fifth, from "the Tathāgatas" downward, he also cannot make defilement and purity, subject and object, equal and non-dual—namely, that mind, Buddha, and sentient beings: these three are without difference; sixth, from "purely adorns" downward, though he illumines the three times, he cannot directly gather virtues through wisdom; seventh, from "accomplishing" downward, though he knows the Buddhas, he has not yet been able to match the Buddhas' dignified deportment; eighth, from "distinguishing" downward, he cannot be sovereign in dharmas. From "how could I" downward, he summarizes his own inability. The stage of the dedication of firm roots of goodness is finished.
