The fifth layer illuminates ten thousand worlds. In the verses, the bodhisattvas are exhorted to cultivate ten kinds of activity: 1. the activity of kindness and compassion; 2. the activity of recollecting the Buddha with faithful mind; 3. the activity of skillful wisdom; 4. the activity of uninterrupted practice; 5. the activity of long-lasting practice; 6. the activity of contemplating the true mark of the body; 7. the activity of contemplating the real realm of the mind; 8. the activity of spiritual powers; 9. the activity of discerning Buddha-lands; 10. the activity of fully knowing the multiple Buddhas. Among these ten: the first one is practice oriented toward sentient beings; the next four are practices oriented toward the Buddha: first faith, second wisdom, third contemplation, fourth seeking; the next two are practices of entering contemplation: first oneself, second others; or, first body, second mind; the last three are practices of giving rise to function: the first is general function, and the following two are cognitive functions: first knowing the lands, second knowing the Buddhas.
