In the fourth abode, the explanation of the name in the positing should be known. The Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra says: "Born from the Buddha's mouth, born transformed from the Dharma," and so forth. The initial ten of one's own level are identical to the ten kinds of knowledge of dharmas in the fourth bhūmi. The first three collect the mind into principle to cultivate the practice of calm (śamatha): (1) realizing the mind in the Buddha; (2) plumbing the source and foundation of dharmas; (3) settling the mind in accord with that; because this corresponds to a supramundane stage, one attains indestructible pure faith in the Triratna. The latter seven illuminate phenomenal characteristics to cultivate the practice of contemplation (vipaśyanā): (1) analyzing the manifold groups of those to be transformed; (2) manifesting lands according to capacities with distinctions that are not one; (3) the different categories of defilement and purity in the circumstantial retribution of sentient beings; (4) karma has distinctions of black and white; (5) retributions have distinctions of suffering and pleasure; (6) birth and death has seven kinds of distinctions; (7) nirvāṇa has distinctions of two, four, and five; in all these, analyzing to reveal emptiness and the distinctions among categories, the two meanings should be understood accordingly. Another explanation: among the seven, the first generally presents the defilement and purity of direct retribution, the next two the defilement and purity of circumstantial retribution, the next two the defilement and purity of cause and fruit, and the next two the defilement and purity of stages, as should be known. In the latter ten of superior advancement, the first three are inquiry and selection; the next three are correct cultivation after selecting; the next three are fulfillment after cultivating; the final one generally concludes non-duality. Another explanation: the first three are teaching dharmas, the next three are practice dharmas, the next three are fruition dharmas, and the last one is principle dharma. The question and explanation should be known.
