5.55

二來意者，有五：一前位次行，謂前明正位，今辨成位之行，故文云何修習梵行具足十住；二前明正位，今辨依位起行；三前別、此通，謂前十住之中各修一種別行，今辨諸位中同行之行；四前通、此別，謂前辨位通，今別明出家人行；五前顯位相差別，今會緣入實，即前相後體故也。

Second, the purpose of its appearance has five aspects: 1. the preceding stage followed by conduct, meaning the preceding clarifies the proper stages, while the present analyzes the conduct that accomplishes the stages, hence the text says 'how to cultivate brahma-conduct so as to complete the ten abodes'; 2. the preceding clarifies the proper stages, while the present analyzes initiating conduct based on the stages; 3. the preceding is specific, while the present is universal, meaning that within the preceding ten abodes each cultivates a specific practice, while the present analyzes practice common across the various stages; 4. the preceding is universal, while the present is specific, meaning that the preceding discerned stages universally, while the present specifically clarifies the conduct of renunciants; 5. the preceding revealed the distinctive characteristics of the stages, while the present integrates conditions into the real—that is, the former being the marks and the latter being the essence.
