Second, because he awakens to the benefit of cause and effect, he is named Mativana. The ten verses are divided into two: the first presents the topic, where the first half brings up the difficulty of meeting the Buddha's virtue, showing that encountering it is cause for celebration, and the second half brings up the difficulty of encountering the assembly, showing that encountering them is cause for rejoicing. The 'great beings free from defilement' are the bodhisattvas. In the nine subsequent explanatory [verses], the first explains the reason why the assembly of bodhisattvas is difficult to encounter: the first half reveals the clarity of their own wisdom, and the second half explains the excellence of their benefiting beings. The latter eight explain the reason why the Buddha's virtue is difficult to approach, wherein the first six properly reveal the Buddha's virtue, and the latter two measure it in terms of understanding. In the former, the first clarifies that the Buddha is a lamp dispelling darkness; the second, that the six pāramitās illuminate completely; the third, that his supreme virtue transcends ordinary sentiment; the fourth, that his quiescent function benefits sentient beings; the fifth, that seeing and hearing him yields benefit; the sixth, from 'Causes are profound and fruits are abundant' onwards, clarifies the benefit of knowledge and understanding, wherein the first verse, in relation to offering to the Buddha, measures the benefit of understanding, and the latter verse, in relation to extensive giving, reveals the loss caused by delusion.
