First, as for its essential nature, the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: 'Patience has three kinds: 1. patience that endures injury and hostility, which has as its essential nature the mental factor of wisdom associated with the wholesome root of non-anger, taking sentient beings as its object; 2. patience that calmly bears suffering, which has as its essential nature the mental factor of wisdom associated with diligence, taking dharmas as its object; 3. patience of discerning contemplation of dharmas, which has as its essential nature the two mental factors of concentration and wisdom, taking the non-existence of dharmas as its object, entering contemplation with right wisdom because the object and wisdom are identical to suchness.' Furthermore, generally speaking, four dharmas constitute its essential nature: first non-anger, next diligence, and finally wisdom together with intention; this is because the three karmas pervade what precedes. Moreover, the Awakening of Faith says: 'Knowing that the essence of dharmatā is free of anger and separated from afflictions, one accordingly cultivates the perfection of patience.'
