Eighth is the Banner Free from Defilement, so named because pure wisdom illuminates reality and defiled hindrances have already been removed. Its ten verses are divided into four parts: first, three verses praise the purity of the Buddha's body and wisdom, wherein first, one verse praises pure wisdom benefiting the world, and the latter two praise the purity of the body—first brushing away the responsive to reveal the real, and second relying on the real to manifest the responsive; next, two verses praise the purity of the three karmas—the first one praises the purity of mental karma, meaning that although fame and virtue are lofty, the mind is constantly at peace; the latter one concerning body and speech can be understood; next, three verses praise the purity of interpenetrating integration—first, illuminating principle; second, manifesting phenomena; third, interpenetrating and revealing unimpededness. Because the vessel world is immediately the enlightened awareness of wisdom, it is said to be immediately the body. This body lacks self-nature, and is furthermore immediately the ultimate truth; hence it is said to be supreme. 'Supreme' refers to the principle of supreme meaning. The lower half explains and reveals unimpededness, which is the aforementioned mutual identity of interpenetrating integration; knowing them equally is named unimpeded wisdom; fourth, the last two verses praise the purity of being free from delusion—the first obliterates object and wisdom, meaning that bodhi is that which illuminates and buddha-dharmas are that which is illuminated, and because of tranquility, there is nothing to be attained; the last one severs the three periods of time, meaning that seeking that previous wisdom and realization throughout the three periods of time is ultimately unobtainable, and hence one is free from those inversions.
