In explaining the title: whose virtues are accomplished without destruction is metaphorically called "vajra" (diamond). Surpassing the mundane realm stands alone, signified by raising a "banner" (dhvaja). Here, the banner itself is made of diamond. "Bodhisattva" is the person who possesses these virtues, an exocentric compound (bahuvrīhi). Dedicating one's own roots of goodness toward three places is the teaching of the virtue of practice—namely, the dedication of Vajradhvaja, a determinative compound (tatpuruṣa), which also admits of an exocentric interpretation. It also admits of an appositional compound (karmadhāraya), because person and dharma are mutually identical. However, it is by using the person to reveal the dharma that both are brought up together; thus this designates the name based on the virtue and reveals the dharma based on the person.
