First, explaining the name: Vijñaptimātratā[siddhi], fascicle nine, states: "Because it accomplishes superior concentration and the great Dharma dhāraṇī, and can emit the boundless light of wondrous wisdom, it is named the Luminous Bhūmi (Prabhākarī)." Interpretation: through obtaining superior concentration, it emits the light of cultivated wisdom; through obtaining dhāraṇī, it emits the light of heard wisdom. The Suvarṇaprabhāsa Sūtra states: "The samādhi of the immeasurable light of wisdom cannot be shaken or vanquished, and has the dhāraṇī of retaining what is heard as its basis; therefore it is named the Luminous Bhūmi." The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "Because it is the support of irreversible samādhi and samāpatti, and the support of the great Dharma's illumination, it is named the Luminous Bhūmi." Vasubandhu explains: "Because in this bhūmi one is constantly inseparable from and irreversible in samādhi and samāpatti, and is able to produce illumination regarding the Mahāyāna Dharma, it is named the Luminous Bhūmi." Asvabhāva explains: "Meditation (dhyāna) is named samādhi; the formless [attainments] are named samāpatti. Alternatively, samādhi is the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind; samāpatti is correct absorption being manifested. As for being the support of the great Dharma's illumination, one attains the light of wisdom regarding the Mahāyāna teaching; because this bhūmi is the supporting cause of that, it is named 'emitting light' (prabhākarī)." Interpretation: the bhūmi takes its name from the fruit-dharmas it produces. The Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra and the Yogācārabhūmi share the same intention as the Mahāyānasaṃgraha. The Prakaraṇāryavācā states: "Realizing the aggregate of dhyāna-samādhi, it is the support of the great light of wisdom." Fascicle forty-nine of the Dà zhìdù lùn names it the Light Bhūmi. The Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā states: "Broadly and extensively studying, expounding the Dharma for the assembly, and able to produce illumination; therefore it is named the Luminous Bhūmi." The Benevolent King Sūtra names it the Luminous Wisdom Bhūmi. The Daśabhūmika-bhāṣya and others are all distinguished as before.
