Fourth, regarding differentiation by the knowledge of all aspects: within the nine gates, the eighth and ninth gates are combined into a single contemplation of beginninglessness. Master Yuan said: 'This is the contemplation of absolute truth. Seeing that the causal collection of phenomena lacks fundamental nature, it is termed beginningless.' Now I state: phenomena arising from causes and conditions definitely lack an original source upon which they initially arise, hence termed 'beginningless'. The Vimalakīrti[-nirdeśa]'s 'basing all phenomena on the root of non-abiding' shares this same meaning. 'Because the middle limit is produced, the latter limit is produced' adduces the phenomenon to explain and establish it, meaning that this dependent origination is precisely non-production, hence termed beginningless; this is the phenomenon known by great knowledge.
