First, explaining the name: The *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* states: "Because of attaining the supreme unimpeded knowledge." Vasubandhu explains: "Through the knowledge of unimpeded comprehension, it is called wisdom; this wisdom is wondrously good, so it is named 'Good Wisdom.'" Asvabhāva explains: "It refers to attaining the supreme four unimpeded comprehensions; the knowledge of unimpeded comprehension is the most superior among all knowledges. Knowledge is precisely wisdom, hence it is called 'Good Wisdom.'" The four unimpeded [comprehensions] are [unimpeded comprehension of] Dharma, meaning, phrasing, and eloquence. By unimpeded comprehension of Dharma, one knows all names and sentences with mastery. By unimpeded comprehension of meaning, one thoroughly penetrates all meanings and principles with mastery. By unimpeded comprehension of phrasing, one differentiates all terms of speech with mastery. By unimpeded comprehension of eloquence, one expounds with mastery throughout the ten directions in accordance with what is appropriate. In this bhūmi, one initially realizes the knowledge of unimpeded comprehension never attained before; hence it is named 'Good Wisdom.' The *Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra* states: "In the ninth bhūmi, the wisdom of the four unimpeded [comprehensions] is the most superior. In a single kṣaṇa, when all humans, devas, and different classes of beings in the trichiliocosm ask questions with different voices and different meanings, this bodhisattva is able with a single voice to answer all questions universally and sever all doubts completely. Therefore it is said to be named 'Good Wisdom.'" The *Suvarṇaprabhāsa* states: "Because preaching the Dharma is mastered and free from distress and toil, one increases in wisdom, masterful and unimpeded." The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* states: "Being masterful in expounding the Dharma in all modes, one attains immaculate, vast wisdom; hence it is named 'Good Wisdom.'" The "Bhūmi Chapter" of the *Yogācārabhūmi* states: "Because in this bhūmi the intention to bring benefit, peace, and happiness to all sentient beings is purified, one attains the bodhisattva's wisdom of unimpeded comprehension. Because one is thereby well able to proclaim the true Dharma, this bhūmi is named the Good Wisdom Bhūmi." The *Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā* states: "Its wisdom turns brighter and becomes increasingly pliant and superior; it is named the Good Wisdom Bhūmi." The *Cheng weishi lun* states: "Because one accomplishes the wondrous four unimpeded comprehensions and is able to preach the Dharma well throughout the ten directions." In the *Benevolent Kings Sūtra*, it is named the Wisdom Light Bhūmi. In the *Dà zhìdù lùn*, it is named the Good Characteristic Bhūmi.
